The Thanksgiving Table


This is what 20 Thanksgiving dinners will buy you: a wash and wear tablecloth with a wild print you could slaughter the turkey on with no change in the pattern; non-red candles that don't stain when they drip; and a bowl of mini-pumpkins you grew yourself because you saw them at 2 for $5 last year and vowed that would never happen to you again.

This is the year I was going to win Christmas. Our house would be just like my aunt’s house in Mississippi when I was growing up.   The house where you were afraid to touch anything.  That’s what good taste means to me—the ability to make everyone else feel that they’ve done everything wrong.  The feeling that you’re only supposed to whisper.   As a grandparent, thats just what I wanted. Trivial? Hardly!

As I slid into my seat, the guy next to me immediately starting joking about how huge he was and telling me that if he bumped me in any way to just slug him. This is always the way coming back to Salt Lake from New York. Friendly. Going out is a different story. Everyone has on their game face, their “I live in New York” face. Their “I’ve got a great haircut and I have no intention of letting you into my space ever” face. On the way back the passengers are over-friendly. Maybe it’s the relief of getting to be yourself again after four days of people running into you and acting like it’s your fault. All the couples returning to Salt Lake have kids, dirty blonde hair, and knee-length Bermudas. We export these wholesome types as our way of obeying the commandment to be leavening in the world. A Perfectly Bad Example of Grandparenting

I’m coming right out and saying something about myself as a grandma that my kids have long suspected. I fed three grandkids cookies all day one day last week. I wanted them of my hair and we’d been out of town and there wasn’t a fruit or vegetable to be found anywhere in my kitchen and I was trying to get cookies ready for the neighbors. So there. Now their parents know for sure that what they suspected all along was true. I’m a bad influence. I also kept them up late, and I mean REALLY, seriously late two nights and let them sleep in until 10:30 the next morning. It couldn’t be helped. We had Christmas parties and we were having fun and it took awhile to home and get jammies on. (I almost said it took awhile to get their teeth brushed, but that would be a lie.)
